Japanese graphic design for advertising boasts a tradition like that of no other country in terms of age, inventive, colour, drawing and, of course, calligraphy, with Latin, Chinese and Japanese characters nearly always appearing side by side. The abundance of signs and colours and the eurhythmy of images and words in these posters all draw on ancient tradition but are also clearly projected into the future, and nearly always ahead of the times. The catalogue illustrates the most significant works produced over the last ten years by both the great masters and younger talents. It includes posters selected by a committee comprising the two masters of contemporary graphic design Kazumasa Nagai and Shin Matsunaga, who also designed the cover.
